GTOs give young people in the regions a leg up into their career
Victorian regional apprentice William Bongers had known for a long time that his goal was to work in construction. "I knew early on, ever since I was little, that I wanted to be a builder," says Will.
Will embarked on his career in construction by connecting with a Group Training Organisation - Westvic, and choosing a school based apprenticeship during high school. When he left school, Will also left the family farm and moved to Colac to continue his full time apprenticeship.
"As soon as I started my full apprenticeship I was doing proper building work and learning so quickly."
Group Training Organisations show students the path to achieve their career goals, offering support and guidance along the way.
"Westvic helped me secure my career and to keep it," says Will. "Having a GTO has been great, if I have any problems I can call my Field Officer and ask for help."
Now Will is ahead of the game. He has achieved something many of his peers would struggle to do less than five years after leaving school – he owns his own home and with his developing skills in construction he's even renovating it himself.
